Through working on my final animation project, I have gained a much clearer understanding of my own strengths and interests as an animator. Before this project, I mainly saw myself as someone who would focus on traditional character animation in the future. I was interested in acting, body movement, timing, and how to bring a character’s emotions to life. However, during the production process of this graduation project, I unexpectedly discovered that I also have a strong ability and interest in creating 2D animation effects.
In this project, I had the opportunity to work on several types of visual effects, especially smoke and fire. At first, I thought these elements would simply support the main animation, but I soon realized that they required their own sense of rhythm, structure, and design. For example, animating smoke was not just about drawing soft shapes; it also involved understanding how it expands, fades, changes direction, and interacts with the surrounding space. Similarly, fire animation required attention to energy, speed, shape language, and the balance between randomness and control. Through repeated experiments and revisions, I became more confident in handling these effects.
This experience helped me realize that 2D effects animation is not secondary to character animation. It is a creative and technical field with its own challenges and artistic value. Good effects can greatly enhance the atmosphere, emotion, and visual impact of an animated scene. I found the process of designing these elements both challenging and enjoyable, and I felt a strong sense of achievement when the effects successfully supported the storytelling.
Because of this project, my future career plan has become broader and more flexible. I will still consider applying for traditional character animation positions, as character performance remains an important interest of mine. However, I will also include 2D effects animation roles in my career options. In the future, I hope to continue improving my skills in effects such as smoke, fire, water, magic, and impact frames. This graduation project has shown me a new direction in animation, and it has encouraged me to explore my potential beyond my original expectations.
